Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu is “snowing”!

According to the official Facebook page of the Board of Trustees of The Sabah Parks, Malaysia, ice and snow are found on Mount Kinabalu due to the cold weather.

On 7 April 2023, between 2.30am to 7am, the temperature of Mount Kinabalu reached -3 to -5 degrees with 17 per cent of humidity, causing the cold weather incident to happen. The freezing occurred from the complex area of Panalaban Sub Station, Taman Kinabalu to Kinabalu peak area.

According to the pictures taken by Sahrul Bianus, Linus Ladsou, Ballery, Pollely Roipon, and shared by Sabah Parks, ice and snow are found on the fence, stairs, and stones of the mountain. Sabah Parks also urged climbers to be cautious as the granite surface is slippery due to ice freezing.

“So far the climbing activity is smooth and controlled. No emergency/accident reported/happened. AMS cases can also occur easily in relatively cold weather conditions,” Sabah Parks added.

Many netizens are fascinated by the snow and ice on Mount Kinabalu, while some point out that it will be more challenging to conquer the mountain during cold weather like such.
